Banking Resume Tips

In the banking world, there are any number of positions from CEO's to financial analyst to mutual fund managers and the list goes on and on. The upside is that all those resumes are basically done the same way. A banking resume is done in a pretty standard fashion.

The key to having a successful resume is it's organization. Bullet points are key because you are going to want your resume to be able to be scanned yet still make sense and be eye catching. Unlike a lot of resumes you might see, work experience and its relation ship to the new position come before education and skills. It all, however, still starts with the basics.

Contact information. The start of all resumes

  1. Your name
  2. Your address
  3. Your phone numbers
  4. Email address. Those are very needed nowadays

Career objectives. This is just that brief statement about what you are looking for in a career and how that coincides with the bank's goals.

Qualifications. This is the single most important part of your resume. This is where you explain what you can bring to the table. If you ran the commercial loan department for 10 years now is the time to say so. Your accomplishments in that area would also go there.

Areas of expertise. The repeats a lot of what you just said but give you a form that allows you to use bullet points of easy reading, like P & L management or cash flow officer.

Accomplishments. These are job related as well. Try to be quantitative, If the fund you managed did well, say how much. If you decreased bad loans you need to say how much. It is a bank and banks have to be about money.

Keywords. Use key words as much as you can. They cannot all be listed as they vary from field to field. “Auditing” does not come up much if you are in mutual funds but does quite a bit if you are involved in P & L. It is also very important to try to use key words in your title. These could be Staff accountant, financial planner, cost accountant, portfolio manager, finance manager, financial reporting analyst, international controller, financial analyst, VP of finance, CFO, chief financial officer, treasurer, assistant controller, book-keeper, accounts payable clerk, accounts receivable clerk, collections specialist, mutual fund analyst, credit analyst, payroll clerk, payroll manager, financial assistant, director of investor relations, procurement specialist and or purchasing manager.
