Attorney Resume Tips

An attorney resume very much reflects the work involved. Like your work, the true name of the game is documentation. You need to show what you have done professionally and how that demonstrates your ability to learn and absorb new information and then present it. It is the character of the work and the resume should show that.

Communication and interpersonal skills are important for an attorney. You have to be able to demonstrate your ability to develop reports with clients. Since your experience will be crucial in helping you get the job you are looking for you will need to be able to show this. This is where being meticulous in your documentation comes into play.

As you can see, despite that being an attorney has a certain skill set, the resume is really very basic in its structure. Your most powerful too here is to use action verbs. Avoid all passive form if at all possible. You want the person that is reading your resume to see you in action, not be reading a tombstone. Oddly enough, that is just how it comes off.

For your resume you are going to use the basic form that everyone is familiar with. You goal will be to supply the information needed in a quick way that makes sense, just like you would expect a legal paper to be.

Contact information. You really should not need help here.

1. Your name, of course
2. Your address (or addresses}
3. Contact phone numbers
4. Email address. That has become much more important in recent years.

Objective. This is just a brief statement about what you hope to achieve from the position

Education. This is most important with your finding your first job so be very though.

1. Degree
2. Date
3. School
4. Location
5. Any special certificates you received

Skills. This is where you will go into bits of your law education as well as any other relevant pieces of information they might want to consider

Work experience. While your previous firms should be listed (much like you did with your education) it is more important about the work itself. For instance, it is not near as important that you worked for Bonnie, Clyde, & Ass as it is you wrote part of the brief for Roe v. Wade.
